The Minnesota state legislature narrowly approved measure SF 1308 that places a proposed amendment to the state consitution before the voters in 2012. This amendment says:
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
Section 1. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROPOSED.
An amendment to the Minnesota Constitution is proposed to the people. If the amendment is adopted, a section shall be added to article XIII, to read:
Sec. 13. Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.
Sec. 2. SUBMISSION TO VOTERS.
(a) The proposed amendment must be submitted to the people at the 2012 general election. The question submitted must be: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?”
State law already defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman, but the right-wing buttinskys in our fair state want to drive more nails into the coffin.
One of the strongest proponents of this legislation is the Minnesota Family Council, headed by Tom Prichard. Mr. Prichard has asked that opponents to the proposed amendment keep the debate “respectful”.
Let’s see how respectful his organization is.
The MFC was originally called the Berean League, which was an organization that sought preserve Minnesota’s anti-sodomy laws. (Yes, fellatio and cunnilingus were once punishable by prison sentences and fines). However, those laws were only enforced when pinheaded religiosity morons wanted to prosecute gays and lesbians in the state; there was not a single conviction for sodomy committed by straight participants.
The MFC has been labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center for spreading false and condemning information about the LGBT community. These snapshots of contents from the MFC site, specifically in the section labeled Homosexuality, highlight why:
Guess what happens now when you go to the MFC page that contained this information?
Once the Minnesota Independent and Good As You websites brought forth the light of truth to what these hate-mongers were spewing, they pull the pages from public views.
If you had the courage of your convictions and believed what you say, Mr. Prichard, you and the other homophobic wackadoodles at MFC wouldn’t try to hide your lies. And as we all know, once it’s out on the internet, it never, ever disappears from view.
