This (humble) website will be joining the protest against SOPA and Pro-IP on Wednesday, January 18, by being dark for the entire day.
Please take a moment, if you see this page today, to think about how little true information would make it to you these days if it were not for the internet. You would hear almost nothing about the Occupy movement, one of the most important social movements of the last 100 years. You would not have heard about Guantanamo Bay, or the implications of the NDAA, the continued suspension of habeas corpus, or indeed anything that the corporate-owned mass media didn’t want you to hear.
Now imagine what it would be like if the government could also legally shut down any website it didn’t like, or didn’t agree with.
You think crying “First Amendment!” will make any difference? Really?
Get off this page right now. Reflect on how much real news and transparency gets to you because of the internet. Go read a book, or call your mother, or play ball outside with your children. But most importantly, go write real letters to your Congresscritter and Senator and tell them how you think SOPA and PIPA will play into the hands of those who don’t want you to know.
